Saturday night I nearly choked on
my dinner when I saw the bare feet of a lady dining nearby. And I’m sure I gawked
at a grown woman wearing flip-flops in the grocery store on a recent frigid day.
What’s up with these people? Like
Terry’s dad used to say, I don’t get it.
Don’t
they feel the cold? Were they raised in Alaska?

Sunday
when I dressed for church, the temperature was 37 degrees, which felt mighty cold
to this Arkansas girl. I
thought about wearing boots or shoes with trouser socks, but the outfit I’d put on called for flats. That meant deciding if wearing those cute shoes was worth being
miserable all morning, because in the winter if I don’t wear socks, my feet are
ALWAYS cold.
And I
hate being cold. Even way back at 610 North 7th Street when we played in the snow,
I was the first to go inside because my feet felt like blocks of ice.
Sunday, vanity won out. I opted for flats, which meant I had to decide whether to wear
hose. Have you noticed how women go bare legged with high heels or flats these days? Even in the winter? How do they stand it?

I'm all for leaving off stockings--as my mother called them--in warm weather. In fact, I change into sandals as
soon as I can and wear them as long as I can. But when the temperature drops,
back in the closet they go.
I wore
hose even though it made me feel a bit old-ladyish. I just couldn't face icy feet.
When
I see folks walking around in shorts and sandals in 30-degrees-with-a-chance-of-snow-or-sleet weather, I want to
stop them and ask if they have shoes, socks and warm clothes in the car. You know, in case
they slide off into a ditch and get stranded.
What are they thinking?
If
I knew their mothers, I’d call and tell on them.
What
about you?
Do you go without socks in the winter? Wear sandals?
Do I need to
report you to your mom?
